![]() Here in Alaska is a booming side business for private shops to convert cars to HID, does not matter what kind of housing, and it can be a nightmare with oncoming traffic on busy two lane hiways and you have car and truck one after another with blinding lights, but you just discipline yourself to focusing your line of sight to the side. If left to run both highs and lows for a while, you would typically start to melt the chrome reflector material. Halogens produce more radiant 'wasted' heat that sits around the headlight, but much more physical heat is put off by HIDs. ![]() Sylvania released a temp Osram xenon bulbglass, so the glass surface temperature is 750 ✬ = 1382 ✯įor hid bulbs, which use an arc discharge. HID = Hotter surface temperature (the plasma arc is ridiculously hot, think lightening) Halogen = More radiant heat (infrared/wasted light) A typical 55W Halogen runs a surface temp of around 633 degrees while a 35Watt HID runs over 1300 degrees ![]() However the inside of the bulb is pressurized to between 20-30 atmospheres (when warm) which allows the arc to form at a lower temperature than otherwise. The electrical arc formed between the electrodes in a HID bulb is a plasma, which requires/produces a lot of heat to maintain. You may think that HID bulbs would run cooler since an electrical arc doesn't radiate heat as much as a burning filimant.even if the arc's heat is more concentrated. And a 35Watt system will put out a lot more than a factory 55-60watt halogen. In the sense that it converts better with assistance of a ballast.
